Namiri Plains Camp

Namiri Plains camp was created for real safari enthusiasts seeking comfort and exclusivity in secluded surroundings, excellent guiding and a deeper, more intense wildlife experience. The Ngare Nanyuki underground river creates pockets of permanent water that support year-round concentrations of wildlife. With easy prey available throughout the year there is more than enough big cat activity here and the dramatic rocky outcrops that dot the plains serve as excellent observation points for cheetah, lion and leopard on the lookout for prey. The migration passes through Namiri Plains from October to May and unleashes spectacular predator sightings during December and January as the resident big cats feast on the passing herds of wildebeest and zebra. Explore the Namiri Plains on daily game drives; enjoy sunrise breakfast picnics on top of Soit Le Motonyi rock or sundowners on top of a kopje.

To minimize the impact on the environment the camp comprises of only eight tents. Pitched in the shade of giant acacias, this small and exclusive tented haven offers 360° views of wildlife crossing the surrounding plains, the river area with its perennial vegetation and dense green reed beds that attract birds and smaller wildlife species. The standard of comfort at Namiri Plains is nothing short of superb. Eight large tents (spaced generously apart), en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets, super-soaking bucket showers, snug beds and a well-stocked bar are all even the most discerning guest could wish for.

Located in South Central Serengeti – Tanzania – (within the Moru Kopjes area), Serengeti Pioneer Camp is ideally situated to offer superlative access to the annual migration and the ‘Big 5’ with sweeping views overlooking Moru Kopjes, Lake Magadi and the endless plains.

Comprising of ten-tented accommodations, all of which have en-suite facilities including a flushing toilet, vanity basin, and showers, the tent interiors are designed to evoke the very best of an era long-gone but certainly not forgotten.

Dining under the Stars

A dining tent hosts the Camp’s guests for both breakfast and dinner, whilst luncheons are taken either in the Camp or in the bush during what will no doubt be yet another enthralling day in the Serengeti.

Serengeti Pioneer Camp captures the original essence of the mobile African safari, engendering nostalgic wonderment whilst unlocking the adventurous spirit within all of us. The drama and beauty of the Serengeti National Park is indeed awe inspiring.

Singita Sasakwa Lodge

A leading light from Singita Serengeti’s Grumeti Reserve portfolio, Sasakwa Lodge is located in northern Tanzania, in the western corridor of Serengeti National Park.

Purpose built, situated on a small hill overlooking the plains, and positioned so as to maximise guests’ experience of the migration, Sasakwa Lodge is a stone build reminiscent of the colonial clubs of yesteryear. Consisting of a main lodge and 7 luxury suites, the shared areas include drawing, dining and billiard rooms, a library, bar, shop, children’s playroom and swimming pool. Underlining the aristocratic upcountry feel, antiques, old leather furniture, hurricane lamps, gilded mirrors, giant paintings, a grand piano and chandeliers populate various rooms. The service at Sasakwa Lodge – discreet, highly attentive – is excellent, and the food, which, apart from a breakfast buffet, is served a la carte, is European and designed to emulate the best of Europe’s restaurants.

Situated in their own private gardens, the sleeping suites are not all of the same size. The smallest has just one bedroom, while the largest has 4. A homage to nineteenth century expat designs, the suites’ exteriors are marked by a small porch and rear verandah, while the rooms have been furnished by Cecile and Boyd, and are characterised by the same opulent taste exhibited in the main lodge. Each suite includes a separate lounge, open fire, double bed(s), separate bathroom(s), dressing area and plunge pool. The bathrooms are from another world: split into three – washing room, bath, toilet – they are enormous.

Activities at Sasakwa Lodge include game drives, guided walks, bush picnics, spa and massage facilities, horse riding, archery, tennis and ballooning.

Singita Faru Faru Lodge

Located in the Singita Grumeti Reserves, in the south west of Serengeti National Park, Faru Faru Lodge is situated 100 metres north of the Grumeti river, and is superbly positioned for both resident game viewing and the migration.

A mixed material build – stone, wood, thatch and canvas – Faru Faru opened for business in 2007, and is the latest addition to the area’s collection of luxury lodges. Inspired by pictures and descriptions of a 1950s botanist camp, the lodge is designed to both evoke another time and, by choosing this particular time, an era known for its attention to interior spaces, it has in its minimalist approach to decor and to furniture a very contemporary retro feel about it, which – while not to everybody’s taste – makes a highly original statement about the what can be done with wild accommodation.

Consisting of a dining room, lounge, spa, library, shop, verandah, fire pit, swimming pool and room for up to 22 guests, Faru Faru manages to combine the weight of a reasonably large lodge with the intimacy of a smallish camp. Built on a bluff overlooking the river, and beginning with the pool, which follows the contours of the slope, it rises in a series of steps, all of which serve as viewing platforms. The lounge – polished floor, simple log seats, comfortable armchairs, open fire – acts as a focal point. The food is excellent, special diets are well catered for, and the service is unobtrusive, first rate.

The 8 suites and Villa suite are discretely positioned up-slope, behind the dining room. While the Villa suite would suit couples travelling together, one of the 8 suites is large enough for a family of four. Very modern – air conditioning, wi-fi, drinks fridge etc. – and, like the main lodge, equally stylised, each suite is comfortably furnished, possesses a double bed, bath and flush toilets and a verandah. Much is made by guests of the botanist theme, and old books, artifacts and a telescope complete the room’s charm. Large sliding glass fronts keep the night chill at bay, and provide outstanding views of the bush.

Singita Explore Mobile Tented Camp

With 340 000 acres of private Tanzanian concession to explore, and backed by an organisation who’s low impact, conservation savvy lodges and camps have won just about every there is to win by way of eco-luxury awards, the new (in operation since June 2011) Singita Mobile Tented Camp is fast becoming the way to explore the Serengeti’s less visited wild lands.

Briefly, the Singita Mobile Tented Camp is booked on an exclusive basis, a particular trip lasting for anything between 3 and 7 nights, with the camp set and struck according to the climate, vegetation and movement of the animals. Supported by 3 of Singita’s lodges (Sasakwa, Faru Faru and Sabora), and by an extremely experienced team of guides, camp managers, chef and kitchen staff, the camp accommodates groups of between 2 and 12 guests, and consists of a mess tent and between 1 and 6 sleeping tents.

Designed by Cecil and Boyd, the brief being accommodation that is at once lean and luxurious, the camp is a canvas and pole build, the overall feel being one that caters for a client whose love for the wild is excellently mediated by expedient luxuries: comfortable sleeps, great food, fine wine, fabulous service. A mixed material affair – steel, leather, rubber and natural fabrics – the mess tent includes a bar, seating area, veranda and library.

The food and service is outstanding. With a focus on the homemade, breakfast is a buffet affair, lunch, as one guest recently put it, ‘a smorgasbord of cold meats’ and the offer of a hot dish, normally accompanied by kachimbari, a local salad known for its lime and chilli hit, while dinner is silver service. The oxtail potjie, the chicken and apricot sosaties and the chocolate Malia pud are all stock favourites.

Like the mess tent, the sleeping rooms are both functional and luxurious. Consisting of a twin (pushed together) bed, a seating area, veranda and en-suite bathroom, each room is spacious, tidy and characterised by director chairs, a desk, storage chests, a coffee and tea station and the odd rug. The bathroom includes a sink, toilet and bucket shower.

Due to the close proximity of Singita’s permanent lodges, activities at Singita Mobile Tented Camp are surprisingly varied. They include game drives, swimming, riding, star-gazing, mountain biking, archery, tennis and massage.
